The thyroid gland consists of two connected lobes and is located at the front of the neck, directly below the Adam’s apple. This gland secretes hormones that control metabolism. Thyroid hormones also regulate vital bodily functions, including breathing, heart rate, the central and peripheral nervous systems, muscle strength, body temperature, menstrual cycles in women, blood cholesterol levels, and many other functions.
Thyroid Disorders
Thyroid disorders are among the most well-known and common endocrine diseases, particularly in women. Examples of thyroid disorders include:
- Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
- Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)
- Enlargement of the thyroid gland (nodular or multinodular goiter)

Diagnosis and Treatment of Thyroid Nodules
Thyroid nodules are a common occurrence; the prevalence of thyroid nodules in the general population can exceed 50 percent. The vast majority of these nodules are benign, posing no risk regarding tissue structure or functional changes; however, it is essential to diagnose them and rule out the possibility of malignancy or transformation. This is where ultrasound plays a crucial role in diagnosing and classifying these nodules. It provides an overview of the gland’s overall size, as well as the size, number, nature, and level of suspicion associated with the nodules. Using the TIRADS (Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data Systems) classification, we assess specific characteristics and the sonographic appearance of the nodule to assign a numerical score; this score subsequently helps determine the level of suspicion and guides the follow-up plan or the decision to biopsy the nodule.
